Chandigarh University girl students on Sunday courted a controversy over a video that allegedly incited protests, Punjab Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Hare ordered a thorough probe into the matter.
The Punjab Police has arrested the girl student accused in the case.
Students of Chandigarh University in Mohali staged a massive protest on Saturday night after a 'leak protest video' against female students.
Protesting students said that a student had made a video showing female students taking bath in the hostel. Later this video went viral on social media. Female students living in the hostel tried to commit suicide after the video was shown, said protesting students. But the police have ruled out a suicide attempt.
Police has arrested a student in the case Of Chandigarh University .
"The video shot and circulated by a student is a case. An FIR has been registered in the matter and the accused has been arrested. No death has been reported in connection with the incident. As of medical information. As per, there has been no suicide attempt or death. A student taken in an ambulance was suffering from depression and our team is in touch with him, said Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vivek Soni.
"Forensic evidence is being collected. From our investigation so far, we have come to know that there is only one video of the accused, no other video has been recorded, and electronic devices and mobile phones have also been seized." And it will be sent for forensic examination.We have not received any other video except the student video.
Punjab Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Mithar has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.
"Very sad to learn about the tragedy in Chandigarh University as this matter is very sensitive and I request you not to spread unconfirmed news. There is no news of suicide of any student. I assure justice to the students of the university. I give it. Especially the girls. DC Mohali and SSP have been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation. The minister said that the guilty will not be spared.
Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains assured the students of Chandigarh University to remain calm and said criminals would not be spared.
"I humbly request all students of Chandigarh University to remain calm. No one will be spared. This is very serious and concerns the dignity of our sisters and daughters," the minister tweeted.
The Punjab State Commission for Women has taken cognizance of the matter.
"This is a serious matter. An investigation is underway. I am here to assure the parents of the students that the accused will not be spared," Punjab State Women's Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati said.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal condemned the incident. Kejriwal tweeted, 'A girl has gone viral by making videos against many girls in Chandigarh University. Everyone is with you, be patient.
Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Som Prakash also demanded strict action against the culprits.
A BJP leader told ANI, "It is an unfortunate incident. Police should take strict action against those involved in this incident.
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said those posting "objectionable" videos will be punished severely.
A student involved in sharing the video online has been arrested.
She said that she had sent a youth from Shimla who allegedly made a video of some female students and uploaded it on social media.
