It's been a year since Josh Wardle, a New York-based software developer originally from the UK, first released Wordley to the public, and the online sensation's popularity shows no signs of waning.
The rules of the game are very simple. Each day the player must form a five-letter word in six or fewer guesses. After each guess, the letters highlight how accurate they were. If a letter turns green, it is in both the word and the correct position. Yellow means the letter is in the word but placed in the wrong place, while gray means it is not there at all.
Speaking to Newsweek in January, Wardle explained that while he has Wordley figured out, he doesn't know the answer ahead of time.
He said: "When I designed the game, it was for me and my partner to enjoy, so I made sure all entries were random. In other words, I don't really know what tomorrow's word will be." , which means I can participate like everyone else."
Later that month, Wardle sold Wardle to The New York Times for a seven-figure fee, although the game is free to play.
Wordle's popularity for fans of singing sensation Taylor Swift has helped inspire many other online games, including Worldley, Nerdle, and Taylorddle.
