The San Francisco 49ers have done a few things this season that could backfire against them. But as it turns out, one of these things can save the other. In Sunday's 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks, 49ers quarterback Trey Lance was ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle.

The injury occurred with 2:33 left in the first quarter. Lance ran into the right guard gap and came down hard after a two-yard run. He was thrown from the field.
Then Jimmy Garoppolo, now backup quarterback, came in after recently agreeing to a renegotiated contract and got the team in good form, completing 13 of 21 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown. The 49ers' lance is impressive, and they're limited by Garoppolo's low ceiling, but at least they're not quarterback risk mode following Lance's injury. Atonement, maybe.
